Making Money From Google AdSense

Every day Google gives millions of dollars to website owners around the world. To get your share of this handout you need to look at AdSense.

Google AdSense is based on Google Adwords which is a form of online advertising run by the Google network. When a website wants to be found in the search engine for a particular phrase it can pay to be guaranteed a place rather than wait for the Google search engine to choose it naturally. If you do a search on Google for anything you will see a set of results like the ones below.

These results are split into two main sections; the organic or free listings (1) and the Adwords or sponsored listings (2). The advertisers are not charged to have their adverts displayed but they are charged a small amount if someone clicks on their advert to visit their website. This is where the system gets its name, Pay Per Click (PPC).

Google AdSense is where you display Google Adwords adverts on your website - have a look on the right of this page. When someone visits your website and clicks on an AdSense advert the advertiser is charged an amount by Google who then gives about 75% to you as your commission. Each click you generate will earn you a relatively small amount of money, perhaps $.50. To get rich using Google AdSense you therefore need lots and lots of clicks.

In general there are three main aspects to getting more clicks and therefore more money.

  • Increase the number of people visiting each of your websites - your traffic.
  • Create lots and lots of websites - your network.
  • Increase the percentage of people who click on an advert when they visit your website - your click through rate.
